The hard rain fell on Foggy Creek. Black snakes choked the town’s streets. Raptors crowded people’s patios and roofs and attacked the snakes, leaving a huge mess. Foggy Creek residents began to panic. Police responded to 9-1-1 calls as snakes began to breach homes and businesses.

It was an unprecedented situation. Police called the town’s volunteer fire department to help direct traffic away from areas overwhelmed by snakes and their attackers from above.

Mr. Nguyen had locked up at Win Construction and was now driving slowly through town. His windshield wipers slapped back and forth. He kept running into roadblocks. In the pouring rain, he was having trouble seeing very far in front of his truck and he was sitting forward in his seat with his face as close to the windshield as his seat belt would allow. He slowly pulled up to a first responder in a bright orange rain poncho. The person was holding a flashlight in each hand.

“What the heck is going on?” Mr. Nguyen asked.

“Police called us out to block these streets,” the first responder said. “It’s not the rain. It’s the snakes. I’ve never seen anything like it. They’re everywhere.”

“Any idea where they came from?” Mr. Nguyen had to shout to be heard above the rain.

“No idea. But there are birds flying down to attack. It’s like a wildlife war out here!”

“I’m trying to get to the Foggy Rest Motel. Are any streets open?”

“Try Third Street,” she advised. “I came over on that. You should be able to get through.”

Mr. Nguyen flashed a thumbs-up sign. He closed his window and drove off slowly. His wipers were still cranking full blast. Mr. Nguyen was headed to meet his geologist friend to go over the plan for tomorrow. But at the moment, he was concerned the night’s strange events might derail those plans. The rain came down stronger. Because of the heavy rain, it took longer to get to the Foggy Rest than it normally would.

Finally, he pulled into the Foggy Rest parking lot. Through the rain, his headlights illuminated a familiar orange and white helicopter parked in the field at the edge of the hotel’s parking lot. He knew the helicopter belonged to Professor Anna Crude, his geologist friend. He’d ridden in that same chopper with her before when they had surveyed potential oil fields together.

Mr. Nguyen parked as close to the motel’s main entrance as he could, then sprinted to the lobby door under his umbrella. He had to jump over several snakes on the way.

The manager of the motel was waiting inside the door to let him in. He held a broom in his hand that he was using as a weapon to chase away snakes in case they tried to slither inside when the door opened.

“Hey, Buddy! Watch your step,” the manager said as he let Mr. Nguyen inside.

Homer Lodge had managed the Foggy Rest for as long as Mr. Nguyen could remember. Like most longtime residents in Foggy Creek, the two men knew each other.
